Default Storms on the Great Lakes

typically produce worse waves than ocean storms, all things being equal. (Wave height is proportional to water depth and the Great Lakes are more shallow than the oceans). So there were a lot of lighthouses around the Great Lakes. This one is the Michigan City East Pierhead Lighthouse in Indiana.

It was built in 1904 of a steel frame clad in cast iron plates (which you can best see on the right side) and replaced the original that was built in 1871. The catwalk allowed access to and from the lighthouse when severe weather created high waves.

You usually don't see catwalks like that on coastal lighthouses.

......and if it were needed, I wouldn't use it, DANG that would be scary.

But I do like the image very much.

Thanks, Bob. It was a sunny morning but the lighting seemed moody anyway - rather unusual.

Excellent shot, Ted! Color, contrast, focus and composition are all spot-on.

I was thinking the same; would not want to be on that catwalk in a storm.

Thanks Steven - they charged me $6 to get into the parking lot to get close enough to shoot it, so I had to make it a good one.

Cool shot Ted. Be "Fun" walking to the lighthouse in a storm.

The Lighthouse north of Golden Gate has a bridge/catwalk but it's way above any wave height. It's just to get to the rock it's perched on.

I like the photo though, pretty architectural.
