Default R.i.p.

My host in Vermont took me to a couple old cemetaries. Very unlike the ones we have in Kentucky and unlike the newer cemetaries, the headstones were spectacular.
For the mostpart they are made of Barre granite (named after the city of Barre, Vermont). You can read about it here: http://urly.fi/3ok

I have seen the original Pieta in Rome and this copy is VERY well done.

Tombstone of my host's uncle.

Many of the graves were marked with these. The "GAR" stands for Grand Army of the Republic. There were many armies during the Civil War. Afterwards, the veterans decided to join under one banner. This was the forerunner of the American Legion.

As interesting as the GAR markers were, there were these, too.

Thanks, Harj. There were some really beautiful monuments there. Some went into the bizarre. I thought I had taken some shots of them, but can't seem to find them. One was a race car carved in granite. Another was a shotgun and a brace of ducks. Pretty wild stuff!

Very cool, Gary.

Asa Dodge lived from 1770 to 1855? Holy cow - I didn't think anyone lived that long, back then.

Not a usual subject but brought excellent in picture.
I must say I never saw gravestones like these in my life.

Many thanks, everyone. Indeed, he did, Ted. There were quite a few of them that lived into the 90s. It surprised me, too.
