I did the cleaning and it MIGHT have helped a slight bit, but the manual focus ring was still not reacting to adjustments. I shipped the lens back to the guy this morning, as he said that's what he prefered. So I hope to get his other 70-300 lens soon.

Sometimes it is better to spend a little more and buy new, less hassle.

I wouldn't go that far. I have purchased two very expensive Oly SHG lenses and they have given me a lot of good service. But I bought them from commercial photography stores with good reputations, not a private individual. At this point it's becoming difficult to find new copies of older Oly lenses and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another used lens.

The more expensive the lens the more selective I'd be about who I bought it from. But I'd never hesitate to buy used from B&H, KEH, or the Buy&Sell forum at fourthirdsphoto. I become very careful buying something expensive from an individual on eBay, less hesitant from an eBay store.

I just got the replacement lens this morning. Twisted it onto my new e30 and did a quick focus check, works great! That's how it is supposed to be! The manual focus moves with each movement of the ring. When focused at 70mm and zoomed to 300mm, the focal adjustment is slight and very fast. What a relief.

Here's one shot @ 70 and @ 300. Taken from my office window, full auto everything, no processing or tripod.

That great news Sean. I'm glad that the issue is resolved and hope you have a good time using your new lens. We will all be looking forward to seeing some more of your shots in the future.

glad you got that straightened out, it is one of my most used lenses and I'm sure you'll enjoy yours like I do mine.
