Hi guys! I'm new to this forum and new to the Oly E-500. (Mine just arrived yesterday....) I was just wondering have any of you tried the new Olympus 18-180mm f/3.5-6.3 Zuiko digital Lens? It's a lot less thanthe prices you've mentioned for the 50-200mm (~$425).

Anyone have anyinput on this one?

Thanks in advance...

Hello,

I have now a Fuji FinePix S5500 with 10x optical zoom capability and 4 Megapixels.

I like to photo birds and with the Fuji and I get good results.

I want to update and get a Digital SLR and the OLYMPUS E500 TRIPLE LENS KIT WITH 35mm MACRO, 14-45mm & 40-150mm LENSES, $1349 AU ( This is all I can afford ) seems from my reseach to be a great camera,
but I am worried because I don't know how the 150mm lens compares with the Fugi zoom, I don't want to go backwards.

Have you any Ideas ?

Regards,
Rodney.

First off, 10x is meaningless...it's only the difference between the widest zoom and the closest telephoto...it can mean 18-180, 28-280, 35-350mm, or 100-1000mm.

To compare lenses on different cameras, you need to find the 35mm film equivalent. For the E-system (including the E-500) you have to multiply the number on the lens by 2, so the 40-150mm is the equivalent of an 80-300mm. Once you find out the 35mm eequivalent of your camera, you can compare them.

BTW if you compare the range of the 14-45mm and 40-150mm, you get a total range of 10.7x.

You may also want to do some more research...while the kit lenses are good if that's all you can afford (certainly better than Nikon or Canon kit lenses), there are also higher-end lenses with more range for the Olympus that as a birder you might find better for your needs. Suggest you do some reading at the following link, and while you're there make sure to click "Other Articles" for lots more useful information about the camera:
