75-300 Zuiko- Range and Resolution
At the end of the day today, with the temperatures at 100F I thought I'd shoot a couple of images from my 8th floor office window and see exactly how much detail I could resolve with the 75-300 Micro Zuiko. You can definitely see the heat-related haze in the distant objects, but the resolving power is still very viewable.

Here's an image shot with the 14-42II at 42mm just to give a scale as to the zoom power of the 75-300 in the following images..

Here's a small area of the above scene, shot with the 75-300 at 75mm..

Now, zoomed to 300 and centered on the intersection from the above scene and shot just short of wide open at f7.1. Compare the area covered here to the image shot at 42mm with the 14-42. THAT is zoom range!

And here a 100% crop from the above image. Even with the heat and haze of the air, the license plates on those car can pretty much be completely made out from right at a city block away. Pretty impressive for such a small lens..

The resolving power of that little lens is astounding.
Not only can you clearly make out the license plate but I can also see the female driver in the car.

I wasn't even looking there!

Here's a couple of 100% crops of the moon this evening. This first image is an in-camera JPEG..

The next image is a conversion from a RAW file..

Read a review of this lens (can't find it now) where the user was "giddy" (as he put it) over the resolution and detail he was able to get while shooting distance vistas. The only limiting factor he felt was with atmospherics.

When we next head out to visit my sister and her husband on Maui, this lens will be coming along -- hello humpbacks!

This lens makes me think sometime of getting it or adding a canon 100-400L to my dslr lineup. Tough choice, as the 75-300 looks very sharp at 300mm

About 6 years ago I owned a 100-400L Canon lens with a 10D outfit. Nice lens. Heavy as hell, and zoomed/tromboned out to 400 it really gets long and front-heavy.

I would have loved having this lens this size and reach 7 years ago when we were in Victoria and went out to see the Killer Whale pod.

Wow, Greg, great shots! I spent my birthday money (which isn't for another month) on the Panasonic 45-200, so I won't be able to get this one. Plus the fact that it looks like it would take birthday money, plus Christmas money, then we're to Valentine's day, and you know how that will end :)

great info and pics. I love to see what a particular lens can do.
