re-hashing the grand canyon

Well it's not been shooting weather for a while and there's only so many pictures I can take of the cats and the pooch

(45mm f1.8)

So I figured it would be a good time to revisit the photos I took at the grand canyon 2 years ago now but hadn't done much with. I'm also finding that processing them from RAW in lightroom is giving me an opportunity to hone my skills in the tool. All of these shots were with the Lumix 14mm f2.5 pancake, the E-PL2, VF-2 assisted by my manfrotto monopod. In LR I used gradient filters as well as some brush strokes and heavy shadow slider usage.

Here's some sunrise shots from Yavapai point

Wow, these look great. I'm not a huge fan of how the first photo slides over into grayscale, but with the rest you have done a really good job. I'll be going to the Grand Canyon in July this year (only for one day, probably some small hiking on the south rim and then driving north to Page). so this is getting me excited for the trip!

Hey Drew thanks for your compliment and for checking them out. The Grand Canyon is great, if you can make sure to see a sunset and a sunrise or at least one, it is the best time to photograph, the rest of the day it is really neat to see but a bit tough to photograph and make it interesting, especially if under a clear sky.

Page is pretty cool too we did a raft trip down glen canyon from the damn to lee's ferry as well as a slot canyon tour out of page (secret canyon w/hummer tours, much less crowded than the antelope canyon, they have a max of 10 people per tour with 5 on ours as it was a weekday). In fact we regretted not spending more time in Page area and going north from there into Utah.

I ran number 3 through noiseaware to clean it up a little... when I pixel peep I think I lost something but when I look at it as a whole image I think it is improved slightly... idk I have a tough time deciding where to draw the line with noise  it is so easy to pixel peep and declare that you've lost detail and roll it back when in fact the image is better... thoughts?

They're all reeeeally nice. last time I was there (10 years ago?) I had a pocket camera. Time to go back.

Of the two versions of number 3 I like the 2nd version best. It "seems" sharper but perhaps it's improved highlights and contrast.

thanks Chi, that's what is funny about noise removal; at the micro level you loose detail, but at the macro level it can looker sharper.

I think it's time you go back for sure! I am trying to get back to the area myself next time I'm in Vegas (perenial business trip... no really it is a business trip) I want to go to southern Utah as I felt like there was a lot to explore from Page AZ north.

That photo looks pretty good to me Ramce. I can see detail with my old eyes. :-)

Ahh yes.... the Vermillion Cliffs, Bryce and Zion Canyons, Arches and Canyonlands. Southern UT is one of my favorites. Time for a 32gb card.
