I do not think I have even used that drive since returning from the 2006 trip!

I think back then I had, maybe, 3-4 GB worth of CF cards. I was offloading cards from both my E300 and Katherine's Panasonic FZ8 every night. Just using cards today is definitely the simplest way to go. I would not doubt it if 40GB worth of SD cards is less expensive today than what I paid for that device 5 years ago. When I think about that drive with its' spinning disk and how easy it could have been damaged during the trip....
