The ranch where we were staying is way off the beaten path. I was walking down the paved farm-to-market road that's the only driving route in as I was taking those and all around me I could hear coyotes calling out, some very, very close.

They were probably warning their pack that you were there. We have a healthy population of Coyotes here on Cape Cod. It's not unusual to hear them at sunset.
