Think the issue was the lens being on the camera that is causing packing issue. Which it does if you do not have a dedicated camera backpack or bag. That is why Hards and I recommend some of the travel zooms like the zs7 or hx5v. The lens contracts all the way into the body. Give it a simple rectangular sharp.

Think the op is looking for packing sharp, that is something you can do well with the camera dismantle, but in one piece it is just slightly less bulky with the kit lens, and way bulkier with the panasonic 45-200mm.

The Travel zooms will give you some reach, but no where near as close as the fz. The epl-1 with the panny lens would give you 400mm of reach. Or 600mm when the 100-300 comes out. And it will give you allot better iq. Here is a 400mm sample with the panny 45-200mm. If you need more sample let me know. I have the kit lens 14-42, 20 1.7, and a regular 4/3 macro lens with adapter.

Shoturtle, is this panasonic 45-200 the same one selling on amazon for $268? If it is, image looks nothing as the price suggests (too good).
