spot would definitely helped out. This is the same as situration when I shoot dancing. The spot light effect.

Well, yes it may be tricky but I've taken many pictures of this particular statue with other cameras because I feel it's a good subject to determine a camera's ability to handle DR and exposure and I don't recall having to ever under expose the shot by -1.3 in order to get it right. I will try SPOT meter next time (probably this afternoon when the sun hits the statue). I'll post the results.

The funny thing is, I started doing some research on this very issue and came across many posts reporting this problem but experienced in different ways.
