My logic is that the lens hood is designed not to vignette when at the wide end of the zoom, thus leaving the long end of the zoom vulnerable to extraneous light 'damage'
Yep, which is why Olympus not developing a hood specifically for the 12-50 is so silly. Instead, they call the hood for the 9-18 M. Zuiko THE hood for the 12-50. The hood is designed for a 9mm superwide, making it often of no use in backlight and even light coming from the side with the 12-50 at any focal length.
