Default Sandy's last sitting

It is rare that we are given the gift of a few more days, when the time comes, it always comes too soon. Over memorial day weekend we noticed Sandy was not eating her food right away which is unusual for a dog, we also noticed she was panting a lot. Tuesday we took her to the vet to have her checked for lyme disease or some other tick born illness, like she had last year. The tests came back negative so they took some x-rays. The x-rays showed a worst case scenario, somehow cancer that wasn't there last year when her spleen was taken out had taken hold of her liver and spread to her lungs. In her lungs it was growing quickly and impeding her breathing. She was highly anemic from internal bleeding.

Our hearts were broken. They told use we could take her home but it would be a matter of days, not weeks before it would be too much for her body. We fed her special food, top grade burger and liver. We gave her an herbal supplement from China that helps with coagulation. We saw some initial improvement and were able to keep her comfortable and with us for another week. It was a gift to have some time with her to dode over her and tell her we loved her, to let her lay in the grass in the afternoon sun one more time.

These photos are from that one more time laying in the grass. She was the best dog ever, barked at strange men, loved all children and women, always waiting to greet me when I got home.

Despite our best efforts by this past Tuesday she was worsening, unable to get up and no longer eating, even the most special treats we could find and we knew it was time.

RIP Sandy, Feb/2005-June/2015

Condolences on your loss, and what a moving tribute that your words and photos have created. What a sweet looking dog, and obviously had been well cared for by you and your family.

Pets become such an important part of a family, and the pain of their loss is very real. Having lost a dog to cancer a few years ago, I can relate to the sadness of the passing. I do recommend that you try to obtain another dog quickly.

Best wishes.

I am so sorry you lost your beloved 4 legged family member. Our time with them always seems too short.
Give yourself some time to grieve, but consider that, while a pet can't be replaced, you can make new, happy memories with another.

I am deeply sorry for your lost. We had to do the same thing for our little dog 1 1/2 year ago and it was devastating.

I am very sorry for your loss ramcewan
That is the only bad part of owing a pet
They are part of the family
I am sure you gave her the best 10 years and you will remember that
when you think of Sandy.

Oh I'm sorry man. I always had animals in my life--not sure I could bear having one of my own though. I'm glad you were able to have a few more days.

I am very sorry for your loss ramcewan,

I grow up with dogs since I was a little kid and I know the pain of loosing a good friend.

Sandy was a beautiful dog and you gave her so many years of care and attention.

Regards.

Marcelo
