Default Cherry Valley Coke Ovens, Leetonia OH

Found out about this place when doing a Google search for something completely different. Decided to make the drive on a rather dreary day.

The ovens were built in the mid-19th century and ran until about 1930. They were abandoned and left to return to the Earth. A few years ago some citizens there decided to incorporate it back into their heritage--it's on the National Register of Historical Places and part of their new bike trail. There's not much to see there, so don't make a special trip or anything, heh.

Now that is interesting and unusual. Not sure that I have ever seen those kind of structures before. From the look of the icicles handing down, it must have been rather cold when you took those shots.

It wasn't nice for sure, mid 30s or so, but it was warmer all the previous week. I was surprised to see icicles still around--suppose the old bricks are as good as keeping in the cold in as they used to be at keeping in the heat.

I'm guessing the place is actually kind of pretty later in the Spring when the flowers and green is out, but right now it was just kind of lonesome and gloomy. Looking at these photos a few days later I notice some unusual processing I did with the colors in LR. I kind of like it this way though.

These are cool. Excellent photo op. Yeah, that'd be a 6 hour trek from my daughter's home in Southern NJ when I'm up there in from April 29-May 13. Still, if I had two days to carve out, it might be worth the trip to go and spend at least part of a day in Pittsburgh and see a couple of things I've wanted to see for myself.
