Default C-740UZ Lens Barrel Adapter and filters

I'm interested in adding a barrel adapter to my 740UZ. I've found the Olympus model that's black in color, which doesn't match the camera, and a Sakar one that's brushed aluminum I think and will match nicely. Unless it was a mis-print, they were 2 different diameters. 54mm and 52mm IIRC.

Questions:
1. How do these attach to the camera? Set screws of some kind?
2. Which diameter filters are more desireable?
3. Why doesn't Olympus make one that matches the camera? Black on silver will look dumb.

Any sites or help is much appreciated.

Just to add to this thread, most filter adapters screw into the body of the camera where the lens comes out (it's a 45.6mm thread). The thread you want on the other end is up to you, but you should think of what diameter size filters/lenses you can get in your area (smaller towns don't carry odd size filters). A common size is 52mm...it's not recommended to go smaller due to the chance of vignetting at wider angles.

I keep my tube adapter and a UV (Skylight) filter on the camera at all times to protect the lens barrel UNLESS I'm doing flash photography at wider angles, the tube (and the lens barrel of the camera for that matter) can block part of the flash as seen at:

Mike,
Thanks! I'll have to look closely when I get home. I wasn't aware the barrel was threaded.
My plan is largely to use a UV filter all the time to protect the lens, but a polarizer would sure come in handy occasionally. Looks like the 52mm is in order.

Thanks for the great example of the flash issue. Cool looking chess set.

Cheers,

The barrel ISN'T threaded...where the lens barrel comes out of the camera is...the BODY of the camera that doesn't move. Here's a picture of the tube attached to the camera body:

and the lens barrel moves in/out inside the tube.

Hope that clears it up.

BTW, that chess set is located in a chess store in Toronto.

Right. Thanks again!

I just had my terms wrong. I was calling the round part of the body that the lens fits inside the barrel. Thanks for setting me straight. And with pictures!

I agree with Mike and leave my adapter with UV filter on camera at all times. It also allows me to add other filters or lens quicker.

Gentlemen,
Again my thanks. The guy at the filter connection was great. I ordered the filter adapter up to 52mm, a UV filter "the one to leave on all the time" is their ad copy for it, and a circular polarizer. I'm really anxious to get the polarizer.

Cheers!
