Default D40 zoom remote question

Had the D40 for about a year and never really messed around with the remote control. I tried to use it the other day for some macro stuff and for a macro of a hummingbird feeder (hopefully with bird!).

I could not get the remote to work from behind the camera unless it was about an inch away. From the front, no probs up to 15-20 feet. Any ideas??

The remote only works best from front of the camera. I am suprised that you got it to work at all from behind the camera.

What Gibson said. In addition, the reason you are getting it to work behind the camera is the IR light is reflecting off something in front of the camera and then bouncing back...just like you can point a TV remote at a wall opposite the TV and still have it work...just imagine it's a bright flashlight.

Thanks guys but that doesnt help since the manual clearly states that this camera has 2 IR sensors, one front and one rear.

I was just hoping to hear from a fellow user that may have experienced similar issues.

If you look at steve's review and check out the picts the little black oblong dohicky right above the viewfinder is the rear remote sensor.

Thanks.
