Default Monopods

Anyone here have actual experience using a monopod? Obviously not as stable as a tripod but is it really more stable than just hand-held (assuming you don't have the shakes!)?

Default Yes, if....

I take photos in churches and museums and none allow tripods but some allow monopods. My first few attempts with a monopod were disastrous. Worse than hand-held. Then I read:

It helped a lot and now I find the monopod to be very useful for low-light shots. It doesn't replace a tripod but it's worth having.
