Default Off camera flash options for C5050?

I'm looking for off camera flash options for my C5050 and pretty horrified to discover I need to pay 500 if I want to go down this route with Olympus. This is for the cable, bracket and flash unit. So, what are the altenatives (if any) if I want a dedicated unit from a 3rd partyt manufacture - or do I just use my Vivitar 283 on the hotshoe as a fill in?

Replying to my own message, how sad is that! :-) Anyway, used my old faithful Vivitar 283 with sensor cord yesterday to photograph a restaurant interior and it worked great, going to get the vari power module if it's still available.

With the 283 you have to be carefull...some older ones have a trigger voltage of over 200 volts (Olympus says the trigger voltage should be no more than 10 volts). Newer 283s are safer; info on this page:
