Default d-490 zoom: images too soft

HELP: I am using a D-490 ZOOM and have found that all my images are "soft";they lack sharpness. I have the camera set to normal sharpnes, and the lens is clean. Does anyone know what is happenning?
thanks in advance.

The few times I've done this:
- macro/normal mode is not set correctly
- background has a lot of vertical lines, which can throw off the A/F settings

Just a thought....

Overall I'm happy with my D490 Zoom

Gary:
the images are soft as in slightly out of focus. I have viewed them with acdsee and photoshop with the same result. I have not printed them, and am using a sony trinitron 21" monitor set at 1600X1200. They were not shot with the digital zoom, and I mounted on a tripod. The metadata registered a speed of 1/250 sec in broad daylight. My c-3000, under the same conditions comes up with much better results! Can it be a lens defect or in camera condensation? I can't see anything. I don't believe the 490 is so much lower in quality than my 3000?!!!
