G'day Warden

Having the Oly system does make it a bit harder to find other lenses [the market being flooded with canon & nikon stuff] ... we have a panny G2 in the house so I know what you're going thru

My guess is to google for "4/3 zoom lenses" and see what you get

Hope this helps a bit
Regards, Phil

Hi Warden: you need to ask this question in the Olympus DSLR forum which is located further down the page. There are some excellent choices to be had in Oly glass. Lot's of knowledgeable folks in the Oly dslr forum who can give you expert advice. I don't have time just right now, but others will be glad to help.

Hi Warden,

The requirements for surfing is pretty much the same as most any sport/action endeavor. That is, you'll need to get a fairly fast lens, with good optics and the ability to zoom in close to the surfer.

The Olympus E-3 is actually a pretty good digital camera with some features that will prove to be vital.

First and foremost, it is totally weathersealed which makes it a good camera to have around water.

Secondly, the Fourthirds sensor is about half the size of a normal 35mm camera. This essentially means that the there is a 2x factor for focal length.
Or, simply put, 100mm lens on a 35mm camera, when put on a E3 becomes a 200mm lens.

Olympus sells an outstanding zoom lens , it is the 50-200mm 2.8 lens. In 35mm terms, this lens will give you a focal range of 100mm to 400mm.
There were 2 versions made, the ED version and the newer SWD version.

The downside is that, like all fast lenses the 50-200mm lens is not cheap.
You can pick up a preowned ED version for generally $500USD, The SWD version usually start at $750.00USD

A zoom lens, IMHO, is a better choice than a fast prime. because you will not have any chance to change the focal length. The ability to zoom in on the action or zoom out, will be a major plus.

Also, if you feel that you need more focal length, than this very sharp combination can provide, you can always add a EC-14 tele convertor. This in effect, will add 40% more focal length or the 200 mm now becomes 283mm lens.

Hope that is at least a start for you.
