As newbie, you might be better off shooting initially with the auto settings. Then as you get more confidence try other settings. The camera is very forgiving. As to filling up your memory card, you will have to buy a memory card other than the one provided with the camera. It simply does not store enough pictures at any setting that is worthwhile taking pictures at.

4X6 pictures are absolutely no problem at the auto settings. I've printed my own as well as had them developed at Sam's Club and COSTCO and they work just fine.

Unfortunately, the Xd picture card used by the camera tends to be one of the more pricey memory cards compared to others.

I would hesitate reducing the resolution settings on your camera to force more pictures on the memory card.
