Default SmartMedia - durable media, but will it wear out?

While SmartMedia may become unavailable in the future, the price is still dropping. I wouldn't hesitate to snap up a few extra 128MB cards on eBay for $20-$25! I've never seen a SmartMedia card that has "worn out." Perhaps it happens, but aside from a rare loss of format (easily fixable with SMPREP), has anyone out there damaged a card in regular use?

There is no such thing as 256 and 512MB SM cards. The highest capacity for SM is only 128MB!
At the time of that posting (1 1/2 years ago), there were adds floating about advertising larger capacity SM cards...the products themselves never surfaced.

With reference to Pete's post does anyone know why 4 separate Smartmedia cards would suddenly become "write protected" and subsequently unuseable.

Reformatting , either in camera or on a card reader, has no effect.

PS No labels have been attached.
