I have a year old Olympus C-730UZ which till recently had been serving
me really well. However, a few days ago when I powered on the camera,
all I could see was a black screen in the viewfinder as well as the
LCD. I am able to go into the setup menu and everything else seems to
work except being able to take pictures! Has anybody experienced
this? What could be the issue? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I also have a C-730 (2 yrs old) but have never encountered a similar problem. Sounds like a fatal error since you can't see what picture you're trying to take, if you can even take one. Repair cost may not be economically justifiable but it would not hurt to check for an initial estimate (Olympus or local shop if you have one.)

A little gallows humor - have you check to be sure you've take off the lens cap?

Yup, I will get an estimate at least for the repairs; just wanted to find out if someone else has had the same problem. Also, the I had used the camera 3 weeks ago and everything was ok and the camera has never given me any problems.

PS: The lens cap is off !!! :-)

You could try a hard reset, removing the batteries for more than 24hours; note that you will lose any programmed settings and possibly your picture count, but it might fix the problem for free.

You can probably also do an immediate reset via the camera control menu:

1. Put it in P on the mode dial

2. Open the flash card door

3.Press the OK(in the center of the directional arrows) and the LCD(the |O| one you press to go from LCD to viewfinder) buttons at the same time and hold them down for several seconds. On some models it matters which one you press first, so try both ways.

4.You get a special menu that says USB(for selecting camera control or storage access modes) and Reset

5. Select Reset

Neither of the resets worked .. still the same. Looks like I have to make the trip to the service center. Lets see how it goes .. thanks a ton for all the help, guys.
