Default Filter Thread Diameter Needed For c720

Does anyone know the filter thread diameter on the lense barrel?

It looks like 37 mm.

Thanks,
njb

There's NO threads on the lens (the part that extends out) itself...those are merely cosmetic.

The threads are actually located where the knurled chrome is (the fixed part of the camera that juts out from the body). The thread is 45.6mm. You need what's called a filter tube that converts the 45.6mm to either 55mm (Olympus CLA-4) or 52mm (clone tube). Here's an example:

http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=olycla4

The tube extends past the lens and filters and converter lenses screws onto that. I keep the tube and a skylight filter on at all times (to protect the lens from dust and dings) and only remove it for closeup flash photography (due to it causing a shadow).

BTW, as a 720 user you may want to join the C700/720/730 Yahoo group...we're very active, and have answers like this in our FAQ:

Another good site to look for the tube, lens and filters is www.2filter.com.

Thanks for your quick responses

Here is my dilemna:
I already have an Olympus CLA-4 tube. I was running into a brick wall trying to find a close-up +7 +10 55mm lense set (Tiffen discontinued them.).

My thought was to get a 37mm close up lense set which is readily available and attach it to the original lense barrel, but since the threads are cosmetic, I cannot do that.

Is there an adapter tube that will allow me to use the 43mm lense set, which is also widely available? It shouldn't block my field of vision because the original lense barrel measures less than 40mm.

If so, where can I find it?

You could use a step-down ring, but odds are you'll get vignetting (that's why such a large diameter is used). I just looked at the Tiffen site, and they still list the 55mm closeup lens set is still listed in their current price list:

"55CUS 55mm CLOSE UP LENS SET 049383030419 $60.00"

It's also shown on their current webpage:

http://www.tiffen.com/digital_lenses.htm

If they stopped making it, they certainly haven't stopped selling it.

Here's the link (from their homepage) where I found the price list listing it:

If all else, I'd look at a larger diameter one instead, and use a step-up ring for the situations that you need it.

Thanks alot. I can live with the vignetting.

I called Tiffen directly and they told me that they had discontinued the 55mm set last month and had not got around to changing it on the website. They also did not seem to contact their distributors.

njb,
If your still looking for close up kit for your 720, check a local c.city
store. I am not sure what the mm size at the mounting point is, but they have a kit from Tiffen that ends up taking a 43mm Close-up Tiffen lens for the 700 series. The mounting barrel was 9.95, two piece lens kit with a +7 and 10, at43mm was @30 bucks.
