Default Noise reduction?????

Novice question. What is noise reduction and what does it have to do with taking pictures:?:

The Noise Reduction feature is used when you take a slow shutter speed picture - slower than 1/2 sec. It will electronically "clean" the image of the random red, green and blue pixels that show up in long exposure images. Noise Reduction serves no purpose in normal pictures shot at shutter speeds of 1/4 sec or faster.

Noise reduction, of course, is getting rid of as much noise as possible without damaging your image in the process. Some is often done in camera, and some can be done with post processing with a variety of programs.

Edit: I see Steve explained what the typical NR feature on a camera does. There's usually also some automatic noise reduction done for the other type of noise (the first kind described at the link).
