I think you have a valid point. The C4000 would be a great first camera and it might be a long time before you buy another camera.

you were supposed to tell me the 5050 was way better - that way I would have an excuse to buy it!!! hahahaha

Oh well, it is probably better to go with the cheaper of the 2.

With that said, how big is the difference between a f2.8 and f1.8 lens? A lot of the shots I will be taking will be at night and in bars (motorcycle meets). Would the f1.8 make a huge or small difference? If huge, should I try and find a 4040?

Have you looked into the 4040 at all? it has more features then the 4000, much like the 5050. But its 4mp, not 5.

I have - it just can't be found around here since it has been discontinued. I thought about doing mail order but I really only trust J&R and they don't carry it anymore.

I pretty much figured I was limited to the 5050 or the 4000

eBay is an excellent place to find discontinued items at excellent prices. You can still find refurbished units with manufacturer's warranties there.

So is there a huge or small difference between a F1.8 and F2.8 lens for low light photography?

There were two stops between my f1.4 and f2.8 on my old SLR Contax Zeiss lens, so I would speculate that there are only 1 and possibly 2 stops difference. The real difference for me would be the ability to hand hold shots without blurring because of slow shutter speed. Let's say you could only get 1/15 sec with the 2.8-- you should be able to get at least 1/30s with the f1.8 under the same lighting conditions.
