The Oly C-50 is definitely a good choice for minimal hassle, point-and-shoot camera. It does use proprietary batteries, which may not be a big deal for you.
If you want more manual control or want to learn more about manual controls, I'd go for the excellent C-4040 (which should cost about the same as the C-50) or pay a little bit more and go for the C-5050.
