Default What is EXIF data ?

And how does one go about finding it?

Hello all, I received an Oly C-4000 for Christmas, replacing a D-360.
I see this EXIF data referenced in quite a few posts and an wondering what it is?

Thanks for helping this newbie!

It's data embedded in each JPG image that the camera creates that records information such as the camera model, date and time of the picture, focal length, exposure time, light source, f-number, resolution, etc., etc. Any decent image viewer can display it.

There are some freebie programs available that handles EXIF data as well--check out:

Hope this helps.

If you're using Windows XP, just right click on the picture, select Properties, and then Summary. Please note that editing photos may not rewrite the EXIF data in the file, and it may be lost, so it's a good idea to keep a copy of the original around to preserve this data.

EXIF is also useful if you have an EPSON printer that support Epson's new Print Image Matching (PIM) technology. Although EXIF is not PIM, Epson's PIM II Photoshop plug-in -- available as a free download from Epson's website -- allows you to open a PIM or EXIF encoded image into Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements using the Epson RGB colorspace. This is of significance if you are interested in printing your photos and having them match what you see on screen. You must properly calibrate your monitor with Adobe's Gamma utility first.
