Default C4000 vs. minolta dimage s404

Can anyone help? I am looking at both the olympus c4000 and the minolta dimage s404. The sample pics for both look great. The reviews are both good. Any opinions as to which is better? What is better the smart media or compact flash? I'm a newbie and need lots of help
Thanks to anyone who can help me out!!!

FYI there's now an S414: http://www.steves-digicams.com/diginews.html#s414 CF cards allow larger capacity while staying affordable over other format, SM limit you to 128Mb which is rather small for 4Mp camera.

If you live in the States, you can pre-order the S414 at State Street Discount for $399. The S414 also has a 4X optical zoom versus the 3X on the Olympus.

If you're a newbie, the C-4000 may prove to be frustrating for you. The Minolta Dimage F100 is sleeker than the S404 and only $329 at www.buydig.com, who I consider to be very good merchants.(They also have the S404 for $359.)
It was the camera I was going to buy, before I got a super price on the C-4000. I still wish I had bought the F100, the reviews have it as more of a 'point and shoot', but very positive reviews!
Blessings, Johnny

IMHO AA NiMh rechargeable and CF compatibility is a must for any camera. One give you cheap power source, and the other get you cheap films... all the way to 1G. Every other format just cost more as the density increase (if available @ all).

The other thing is the filter thread on the s404/414 which is also a rarity among digicams theses days with all kinds of hood or adapters which seems to be the norm. I guess in all depends on one shooting style, but at least the CF flash cards can be likely re-used in your next super mega-pixels camera... sD is questionable (not cost competitive) whereas SM is rather unlikely (too small).
