I have a 3-year old C-3040 Zoom that has worked flawlessly until this week. For no apparent reason the camera will now retract the lens as soon as it extends on power up, make a grinding clicking sound, beep several times and then extend it again and retract. The camera then goes into sleep mode with thedisplay off and th lense almost (but not fully) retracted.

I've replaced the batteries and it works normally in playback mode.

I contacted a camera repair outlet by email and they think it may be "a communication breakdown between the lens and main circuit"

Their estimate is for $250 parts and labour to repair it. This is high considering what the camera is now worth so I'd welcome any DIY solutions that anyone may have.

Hi: Don't give up the speed of that f1.8 aperture. There is a reputable used camera dealer advertising a used 3040 for $69.It's at CametaCamera; I just came across it whilebrowsing through their on-line inventory.

Per its description, the camera is mint except for a lot of scratches on the LCD. (For $69, you could put up with the scratches). Plus, you already have the accessories, etcthat will fit. Cameta Camera has been around for years, have never had any bait and swtch problems with them. Their descriptions are usually accurate.

You could also try searches on Google and E-Bay. The C3040 is a good camera that is overlooked by a lot of used camera buyers, so it can be bought for a reasonable price, cheaper than that repair estimate.

Good Luck,

Steven R.
