I installed the software, restarted my computer, then plugged my camera in and clicked on "MY CAMERA" and it says computer cannot detect camera."

What's your operating system?

If it's Windows XP or Vista, does the camera show up in My Computer as a removable drive?

My camera usually gets listed as something like, Removable USB Drive, Generic Volume G.

If something like this shows up when you plug your camera in, you can treat it pretty much like an external hard drive and copy the picture files to the destination of your choice.
