I shot the moon hand held and then processed it in PhotoMatix Tone Mapping which brought in the stars. I used a Nikon D300 and a 70-200mm lens

I'm guessing this is a composite photo as there are stars behind what should be the shadow of the moon.

No it is a straight shot. I used Tone Mapping and that is how it came out.
