Gettysburg - 2014 Part 2

Another one of the things I missed last year was the live mortar fire demonstrations. These folks were very, VERY good! The K-3 and Bigma rose to the occasion in capturing the shells in flight. They are MUCH easier than birds!

A couple with just muzzle flash

This one's a siege mortar. It fires a 45-pound ball!!

You'll have to look through the smoke to spot the ball in this one.

Look in the trees for it in this one.

There were two target areas. The first one was 100 yards out and the second at 250 yards. That stack of hay bales is about 300 yards and was used as a "grand finale" target for the demonstration.

Before - Notice the hat on the pin? One of the park rangers dared the gunners to hit it.

After -- Yeah... the hat was still there... INTACT!

That looks like a lot more fun then my potato launcher. Plus you get a explosion.

How close are those genius's standing near the target? And why?

They are standing IN the target areas. The ammunition being used for the competition was solid shot. It's VERY easy to track in the air. There's only a VERY slight chance of injury as if one guy loses track of a shot, there are 3-4 others to get him out of the way. The explosion was a stunt rig. It was gasoline and TNT triggered when a shot hit the bales of hay. Most of the spectators have no idea what they're looking at. Most come just for noise and horses. Even though the explosion LOOKS big (and it was), it's relatively small in comparison to the real thing. You can see what a real one looks like here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eox-jnTaEgk
