Default Thunder Over Louisville - 2017

Each year Louisville starts its build-up to the Kentucky Derby with Thunder Over Louisville. It is a day of air show, festivities, and capped off by the largest pyrotechnic display in the U.S. Last year they spent approximately $1.7 million dollars on fireworks. This years was slightly more. They are launched from two barges stationed in the river approximately a 1/2 mile apart. There are two bridges in between them that are shut down to traffic and they are LOADED with fireworks the length of them providing some pretty spectacular effects. The air show is also a highlight. It hosts aircraft (both military and civilian) from all over the world. The main participants this year were from the U.S. (of course!), Germany, Canada, and one other I can't seem to recall. The stars of the show were the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning. There were aerobatics and maneuverability demonstrations as well as participation by the U.S. Army parachute team, The Golden Knights. Rather than fight the crowds at the riverfront (which tend to get crazy) and number in six digits (average is 450,000), we elect to take in a baseball game at Slugger Field where we can watch the Louisville River Bats play and catch the air show at the same time. Just after the game, there is usually a performance by so band or other. This years band were HORRIBLE! Unintelligible lyrics "sung" at decibal levels it made our ears bleed performed by an absolutely talentless group. People kept screaming for them to shut up and go back to Chicago! After the "music", it's dark enough for the main attraction -- fireworks. This year it rained off and on all day. It was also quite cold - never reaching over 50F with a stiff wind off the river. However, it did clear up just after the "band" and the fireworks overwhelmed the senses. It you haven't seen Thunder, you need to put it on your bucket list. People from all over the world attend. As we arrived, the tarp was on the field as it was drizzling. Not a promising start to a weather-wise miserable day.

Starting the airshow, this U.S. Navy Sea Stallion performed maneuvers over the riverfront.

This Canadian team of trainers did some amazing things in the air.

The only thing these guys did was blow speakers and ear drums.

One of the MANY displays running the length of the bridge. Bear in mind, there are actually TWO sets of identical displays launching at the same time.
