Man seated with hand in lap, hat on head and chip on shoulder. Found this on Mon while on my river photo mission.

That looks like a cairn. Theses are trail markers used in many parts of the country. If you ever go to Southeastern Utah to Arches National Park, the trail up to delicate arch (the arch on the Utah license plate) crosses a large area of flat solid rock. The only way to follow the trail is to look for these cairns placed about every 100 ft or so.
In Zion National Park, there is a somewhat strenuous hike up to a pool and waterfall. The trail is well marked but passage near the top is difficult. You return by a different exit trail and once you get out of the difficult part, there is a stack of rocks that looks like a cairn but it's not. As people come down the trail, each person places a rock on top. I suspect that from time to time, the park rangers have to scatter the rocks to keep the pile from getting to large. Cal Rasmussen |
