Caught a couple of A10s landing. It's a wonder they can get off the ground with all the armament their carrying! Jim

Very nice capture, Jim. I agree. They almost look pregnant with all that arsenal.

Hi Jim I really like your photo. Damn they must get up to a high speed before they can get off the ground with all that weight.

nice capture, Jim! A-10's are one of my favorite military aircraft. in actual combat missions, they seldom carry antything like that much stuff, but it's reassuring to know they can! fortunately, with the STOL wing configuration and lift they generate, they can still get airborne at relatively low speeds... fully loaded, the thing onlycruises at 250 kias, and takeoff is less than half that. it's old-tech - gauges instead of digital MFD's inthe cockpit - it'sslow, it'sodd-looking (some call it downright ugly)... and it's the best damn ground attack aircraft ever developed.

Thanks Squirl. When ever I go to Tucson to hike I'm treated to an airshow by these guys! They fly them all day, and probably all night down there! Thanks for the additional info! Jim

There used to be a squadron of these at Willow Grove Joint Reserve Base. When I played baseball in high school, these things were overhead every day. Real slow mover with a high pitch "Whine" engine noise. But what an aircraft. I once saw a documentary on this plane and it's role in the Gulf War. One of em took so much fire over the target that half of one wing was blown off and something like 500 bullet holes were counted in the fuselage. Yet the pilot was still able to fly it home and land!! A flying Tank.
BTW, Awesome picture, I never saw one in flight with any ordnance loaded, at least other than what you see in magazines, military channel, etc! |
