![]() Yes, I did say Jazz at Woodlawn Cemetery and why not. I don't know how it got started but musicians like to be buried here and as cemeteries go the place has wonderful ambience. So on September 24, 2006 a group of Julliard musicians came together to honor Jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Sam Lewis, Milt Jackson, Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, W.C Handy, Miles Davis, Charles "Cootie" Williams and Coleman Hawkins by playing their music. All the honorees were in attendance because Woodlawn in the Bronx New York is their final place of residence. The excellent performers: Victor Gaines - Tenor Saxophone, Brandon Lee – Trumpet, Maluku Katakura – Piano, Philip Kuehn – Bass and MacClenny Hunter – Drums ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I knew Miles and met him many times at Birdland in the 50's he was a very funny guy which many people did not know. They only saw the tall gaunt somber figure who hardly uttered a word on stage. He is buried not far from Duke Ellington and wanted to fit in with Jazz royalty. His last joke can be seen on his grave stone. ![]() If you like to see therest: http://lovelife.smugmug.com/gallery/1932975/1 My favorite way to view these pictures is in slideshow mode, click the box in the upper right and then hit the letter "F" on your keyboard |

Jerry, I really like this gallery, very well done. Very professionall, love the interspersment of the cemetery with the shots of the artists. As NRLS jazz and Dixie jazz are some of my favorite music, you would know that I would like jazz. Just imagine being in the French Quarters before Katrina. Hope it comes back in full bloom.

![]() By the way, a year ago a friend of mine here in Akron invited me tojoinhim and his wife to see some local and other jazz musicians perform at the, yes, cemetery. (I declined because of my work schedule.) Iasked him if he was serious and he said, ''Yes!''.The newspaper the following day noted several hundred in attendance. |

Excellent series Jerry. I looked at your gallery and it's great to. There sure is a lot of big names burried at Woodlawn. I wonder if they ever get together and play.
