I remember that article. I read it before I started hanging out here.
Its all very interesting, I decided to keep the filter on and if I get any of the filter flares Im going to submit them to the Enquirer because that one on the top could pass for a ghostly image  What a way to thrill and impress your friends and get rich in the process  |

With the FZ5, the other reason to have the filter on is that you might look kinda strange having that big lens adapter out there with no lense on it...
I mean, you gotta have it to put on your polarizer lens or your close-up lenses, right? Even your teleconverters need the dang plastic threads out there, so who wants to lug it around and attach it every time? Especially with the FZ5 adapter, you need confidence that the UV filter is gonna hang on well to the threads, then you just have to make sure your polarizer or whatever is attached well to the UV filter... And that is the other good reason to have a UV filter always in place-who wants to wear out the plastic threads of the adapter screwing other lenses directly to it? I always have my snap-open lens cap on mine as well. I mean jeez, how could you live without having those metal threads always available? :? |

I have seen a lot of pictures posted in this forum and others, and I have not seen any comment like "Your shoot could be better if you take out the UV filter"
So, I prefer to keep it on and avoid any comment like "Great picture, but the scratch on your lens take all the attention" ![]() |

True about the purist. I did splurge and buy the most expensive multi-coated UV filter that is supposed to let in 99+% of the light.
I suppose I could really miss something in the 1%, eh? |

I would like to add a bit of experience I had with a lens without a filter. I sent hubby to DC with my fuji at some point someone put their fingerprint on the lens so half the pics have a large blurry spot.
Fortunately he didnt notice, if he had he probably would haveunceremoniously cleaned the lens with his t-shirt :sad:and who knows how it would have looked. I will always keep the filter on my FZ20, and a protector on my LCD after I had gotten after hubby for wiping the display with his shirt. I will take it off as necessary which isnt often but Id rather take if off than find a loved one had destroyed an expensive camera lens. Im pretty sure if the fingerprint made it blurry you could do somthing to the lens to damage it to the point it leaves issues on the images. Its not the glass that scratches but the coatings scratch easily, I have the same coatings on my eyeglasses, I have them specially made, these coatings are very delicate and even unseen marks can cause a problem sometimes only noticible at night. And the other reason....I have furry pets and it seems that no amount of cleaning keeps it out of things I worry about sucking a hair into the crack where the lens tube seprarates, I feel much better with it enclosed. |
