I've read so many negative things about digital zoom...that I disabled it. Do any other FZ30 owners use it, and to what degree? 2x? 4x? not at all?

No.

no, 420mm is more than enough for me

No

I believe that it´s better to use software to crop pictures. Why take smaller pics and so loose the possibility to process the pic afterwards.

While I did, or rather my wife did use Digital zoom a lot on the FZ20 it is too hard to access on the FZ30 and you certainly would not want to use it all the time.

Do not sell digital short though....there are advantages to it...mostly it helps you compose and focus correctly.

And do not overlook the extended Zoom it is wonderful and it will print an excellent 8 X 10.

i tried it out once just to see what it was like; not the best images, but that was handheld so i wouldn't expect much. like genece said, its too buried in the menu to be practical, and not easily turned off if you're done with it. lowered the resolution to use the extended zoom range has seemed more practical to me.

I imagine plenty here are tired of seeing this photo ...but to make a point that you may want to use digital at times...This photo was taken with a tcon17 and a tcon14 stacked and 3X digital zoom on a FZ10. And Handheld

If it seems to be the only way to get a photo you want give it a try.

Thanks to all. I have used the Extended Zoom which I like. I've just read so many negatives about digital zoom. I do not have any add on lenses or filters (just got the camera 3 weeks ago).

Or in this case, the only way to get the photo and live! I wouldn't get any closer than the half mile you probably were!

It really was a good distance ....I probably would not have seen the grizzly, but for people with spotting scopes checking it out.
