Croped, resized and some PP
He has been arround for a about a month along with a female cardinal. Don't know why he has filled out solid color. |

Yes, I did crop it heavily, as I was trying to determine if he was just missing feathers or was this a natural coloring. The bird has been around the feeder for months looking like this. I expected him to fill out to solid red color, but so far hasn't.

I hope it is that he is young...as I have quite a few here this year that look like that and I had never noticed that in previous years.
I hope its not an illness. |

Thanks for replying Gene. I too was wondering if it is might be an illness. I thought maybe it was because he is young, but as I mentioned he has been here several months. At least, I believe it to be the same bird.

We have a lot of Cardinals around here (east Texas), too, with that rather unsightly appearance. Seems like I read somewhere that Cardinals go through a molting process periodically...maybe that accounts for it.

Thanks Drobie, that may well explain it. Guess, before I really got interested in photographing birds, I was too busy to really notice.

Might be a bad case of parasites going around as I noticed alot of the local birds seem to be spending alot of time working out on themselves and rolling in the sand vigerously like this little one.

I dont know about your native birds, but at this time of the year alot of adult birds are looking a little tatty, mainly down to a lack of time to preen themselves as they have young in the nest.
