I haven't seen a praying mantis in ages and all of a sudden I see this one resting on the leaf of thisflower. I managed to get few good shots.

Resizing for postingonly. Hand held, no flash. Enjoy.

Comments, critique welcome.

I've always thought that the mantis is just about the coolest bug out there.
It looks like yours didn't want to look at the camera though.

Good captures, nontheless!

I found a baby one last Easter. Unbelievable how tiny they are. I tried to get some pictures of it. Here's the only one that came out decent and also gives some perspective on his size.

Very nice, Macnite - thanks for sharing. It's been SO long since I've seen one in person, maybe fifteen years. When I was young, praying mantids were all over the place, all the time. Nowadays...

Macnite: cool photos and I love the red leaf the mantis is on as it really makes him stand out in all of his beauty!!!

Another nice thing about photographing him on the red leaf is that it matches the reddish shading on his body. Great DOF, too.

DougG - Same situation here. Seems they were everywhere when I was a kid. Rarely see them now. I attribute some of that to the fact that I'm not out playing in the yard as much as I did then.

Super captures, Emmanuel. Was this with the macro lens or the on camera macro setting?
