Okay, it's a Anna's Hummingbird. Not a good picture because it was late in tha day and in the shade but I wanted to show just how bright red it can get. I don't know how it does it but it can instantly go from green and black to bright red. And it does remind me of batman.

Did you paint that redhood on him ??

Beautiful bird Ted. I've never seen one like that. Glad you posted it.

Nice shot and description too. Doesn't it look very much like your avatar looking straight instead of up?

Nice shot, I never thought that hummingbirds came in so much variation. (until I joined this forum).

Very nice, Ted. Thanks for sharing. We don't get that one here in south La.

Nice shot! I miss my hummingbirds...gone until next summer. Donna

Thanks everyone for looking and the nice comments. The Anna's hummer stays here all year. They begin mating as early as December and have been seen nesting as early as February. During their mating ritual their wings can beat as fast as 200 times per minute. The average weight equivalent to 4 to 4.5 paper clips.
jotajota, no I did not paint the hood, their feathers turn red depending on how they catch the sunlight. Any part or all of a males neck and head can turn red. As you see from my avatar only the top of it's head was red and it was sitting in full sunlight. |
what a pretty fellow...nice photo!!!
