Another lunch-time visit to the botanical garden:
#1 There are still lots of praying mantis - very unusual this year. I don't know why there are so many of them this year. They make great subject, however... https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-B.../P1070534a.jpg #2 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-6.../P1070582a.jpg #3 A few shots of a drone fly (honeybee look alike) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-d.../P1070602a.jpg #4 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2.../P1070604a.jpg #5 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9.../P1070591a.jpg #6 Another mantis https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-C.../P1070492a.jpg |

Thanks Catalex, Cole, Carol, jj!!!

Superb shots Saly.... wonderful detail. Those Mantis's are ugly sods... lol... :D
|
Thanks Simon, you think the mantis LOOKS ugly, you should see what they do to their prey. I watched one catch a katydid almost as big as itself, and slowly devour it over a period of 30 minutes or so, after biting off its head. They do the same thing to the males after they mate.....:eek:

Another good series saly, my choices are the 'drone fly' are they the same as 'hover flies'?
|
Thanks square one, yes they are also known as European hoverfly. About the size of a honeybee.
