Thanks Simon, you think the mantis LOOKS ugly, you should see what they do to their prey. I watched one catch a katydid almost as big as itself, and slowly devour it over a period of 30 minutes or so, after biting off its head. They do the same thing to the males after they mate.....

Another good series saly, my choices are the 'drone fly' are they the same as 'hover flies'?

Thanks square one, yes they are also known as European hoverfly. About the size of a honeybee.
