HI all
I,m concidering purchasing the FZ30 I mainly take widelife photos so I need a good zoom. What sort comings (quality loss)are there in pucasing a telephoto ring or would cropping be a better option.? Thanks Graham |

A teleconverter is always better than cropping. There is some minoroptical loss andthe zoom range is limited (but why zoom out when you want to get a bigger subject anyway), but on the other hand you can much better control the focus and you don't enlarge the noise.

No question. Cropping cannot hold a candle to more powerful zoom. Purchase what you need to get the optical clout, crop later, after you get the shot. You may want to keep a tripod handy as unless you have sufficient light, a slow shutter will be more apt to give a less than razor sharp image. Still all things considered, that's the way to go.

You will need a very good lens to get a better resolution with the tcons.
I have done a "cropping test" with the FZ5 some time ago: http://www.geocities.com/seemolf/addon/addon.html The results with the FZ30will be different to some extent. Please don't expect "wonders" with these lenses. Sven |

I would consider using any and all options ...I have photos with stacked teleconverters and digital zoom and cropped more in PS with some wonderful results.
With the FZ30 I would use what it offers and then decide if you need a teleconverter...if you do, the Tcon 17 is hard to beat on the FZ30. |
