Though film still has the edge on digital in some aspects (eg dynamic range, colour depth...) its convenience and low cost per shot mean I rarely shoot film anymore. Though whenever I look at some of my film shots it makes me realise that digital still has a way to go.
That said, bold yet simple compostions that used to be shot using film and darkroom can be obtained readily with a digital workflow and suitable care- eg here is a recent scene I took with my FZ20. |

Thanks all :-)
Sure Nick - I don't mind sharing... Used a red filter and underexposed to get the sky roughly how I wanted it - then in photoshop (prior to desaturating) used the channel mixer to take down the blue significantly, while increasing the green slider a bit to prevent the foliage getting too dark. Then used some levels and curves adjustment to increase the contrast and strengthen both the shadows and highlights. Problem with this process is that it sometimes exaggerates noise - so I also selected the sky and did a fairly strong Gaussian blur (NeatImage would probably also have worked fine for this...) to bring back the necessary continuous tone. Finished off with a couple of blended layers on top - of a slight overall Gaussian blur, at low opacity - to give the highlights a bit of a soft glow, and of a slight sepia tint to add a bit of tonal interest... Think that's about all. |

Thanks again everyone, you're all too kind....
If anyone is interested, another recent shot (from the same trip as the lighthouse photo) that came out nicely is displayed at: http://www.dphoto.us/forumphotos/sho...00/ppuser/1516 This one is straight out of the camera - no post-processing required :-) |
