This is my first real try at capturing images where there was lots of movement. First, my biggest struggle was in tracking the players with the camera and then getting the shot. Second, it started out sunny but quickly clouded over, so I had to keep backing the shutter speed down, as I was getting the red numbers in shutter speed and f# saying this combination would not work. I was shooting in Shutter Priority mode.
I know there is some blurring, but over all I was happy with my first attempts. I know it will just get easier. Have another game tomorrow morning, so any advice would be greatly appreciated and more than welcome. But keep it in mind that I am a complete rookie, so make it very plain. Thanks. Here's my boy going after the ball. He is the one in the blue top. |

These were shot with the FZ30, by the way.
Minimal editing done to the pictures. Cropped, resized, soem adjustments to levels in PS7 due to the cloud cover causing darker results with the shutter speeds. Oh, his team won 5 - 0. |

These look pretty good considering the cloudy weather. Sunshine will obviously help get the shutter faster. You could go to a higher iso tofreeze the action even more. In sunshine, iso200 is pretty free of noise. What camera are you using? Try using spot mode when panning. Also, if you can anticpate the location of the action ahead of time, lock focus on that location with a shutter half-press and complete the shutter release when it happens. Looks like you're well on your way to some very nice action shots.

Nice shots. Especially I like the third one, where you captured a cool dribbling with the ball.
IMO, the problem with these kind of "game" photos, is the ball. Especially, you can notice it in the last one, the round of the ball usually much faster than any object. And when you try to capture it sharp, the light condition is not enough. I have suffered it for a long term. Hope to overcome it with my new fz7. |
