Default Focus and Metering

Can someone please help me understand the AF Mode settings, Spot/1-Area, ect, the first two look like the most important for taking pictures of say a bird, or bug, or a larger object say a plane in the sky. For example. For a Bird (Spot Focus). And for a Plane (1-Area Focus).

And the Metering Modes?

I kind of know what each setting is for, but Could someone explain maybe what each of these would be best used for? Object, VS Distance
