I tried to get a photo of the moon last night, & of course it was way over-exposed.

What settings would all of you recommend, to get a little detail in the moon? (this was handheld, I plan on using my tripod tonight).

I use spot metering, and Black and white film mode. I usually use 1 area AF mode also. The tripod will help a lot and also use either the 2 or 10 second timer.

Thanks Mark! if the clouds disappear; I'll try again tonight. I really want color; as we've got forest fires, and the moon is a beautiful redish/orange. I'll sure give the rest a try; I'd love to be able to capture a good shot.

I used ISO80, F5.2 at 1/200th muti seg metering

My best results were using the above and setting EV to do +1 and -1 EV spread when the moon was full.

I found I had problems with spot metering for some reason

I have always been happy at ISO100, M, Spot metering.

AND if the focus annoys (it does at times to me), just shift to manual and make it go to infinity

Taking images of the moon - esp a full moon is not all that difficult esp if you follow a few suggestions

1-- setup a comfortable laid-back chair in the back yard
2-- open bottle of red or white or whatever your favourite beverage is
3-- have a sip ... or two while enjoying the moon
4-- get camera and set zoom to maximum ... 300mm to 500mm is excellent
5-- repeat step-3
6-- set camera to Shutter-speed mode
7-- set ISO to 200 or 400
8-- repeat step-3
9-- set shutter speed to 1/300 or 1/400 or 1/500
10- repeat step-3
11- take a photo & repeat step-3
12- repeat step-11
