I was having some difficulty getting the focus to lock onto the subject at full zoom(bird on a feeder). The settings were:
AF/AE - Programmed AF/AE (P)
AE mode - Spot
AF mode - Single High Speed
Continuous AF - Off
Subject distance was about 25'.
Zoom - 12X

Switched to Macro mode & I couldn't MAKE the AF miss! I tries several different camera to subject distances & focusing scenarios with perfect accuracy. The most demanding that I tried was a small bird sitting on a branch surrounded by other bare branches closer & more distant. The bird sitting @ about 8' away. I suspect that the macro setting somehow narrows the focusing area or something, thus allowing it to "hit" on a smaller target & ignore the surrounding objects that may confuse the AF. I am planning to explore any negative effects of using the Macro mode for longer shots. Any input from this forum would be appreciated.

I have also been thinking of using telemacro for birds but never tried it because i like to have aparteure control, but if it focus better maybe you don,t need the bigger DOF, but what is the maximum distance for telemacro?
Have you tried OIS 1? this really helps the spotfocus in difficult situations.

So at 12x on macro, what did your photos look like?

A few sample photos would help us understand your point.
