As I was brushing teeth and washing down the paste, out comes this little creature out of the wash basin drain holes, unable to bear either the paste or my bad mouth! I had to rush to get my camera before he slipped in again. Scary and beautiful at the same time. Tried to count his feet - comes to 40, though I have read somewhere they only have odd-pairs of legs (15x2, 17x2, 19x2 etc).

Yikes!!! I understand they deliver a very painful bite! It is amazing some of the places they call home.

Saly & Banksy - I'm sorry to have given you the creeps, but don't imagine my house to be a dirty place - the wash basin is on the outer of the house and the drain is wide and runs straight to the backyard, where plants and trees grow. This particular insect (arthropod, to be more exact) likes to live in banana plant and in other moist places. I dont think it lived in the drain pipe - must have come exploring. Years back, I remember seeing a giant one, almost 9-10 inches long, green-brown combination, on the upper portion of a banana plant. That was really scary. Compared to that, this is tiny, just about 3 inches long.

Thank you Saly, Banksy, Catalex and JJ. JJ, we too have had, some forty years back when we were just settling into developing townships, all kinds of snakes coming into the house. Most of them were harmless and would shy away once they knew you noticed them. Centipedes continue to thrive even amid conjested population!
